Leather Trench Coat

Trench coats are not new to the fashion world for men but the newest addition to the traditional trench coat is the hooded trench coat.

The hooded trench coat is double breasted and modern in style, but with many features of the original trench coat.

The trench coat has come a long way from the days of the Boar wars to the modern man’s fashion wardrobe. During the First World War the soldiers of the British Armed Forces complained that the wool topcoats they wore were too big and awkward making it difficult for them to get around.

Thomas Burberry, a noted designer of men’s apparel designed a coat more fitting for the soldiers and the full length trench coat was born. In the beginning only the officers were allowed to wear the creation., which got its name because it was worn in the trenches.

It was not until the Second World War that the enlisted men of the British army were given the option of wearing the mens double breasted trench coat. It was at that time that the London Fog trench coat was debuted for the U.S. Armed Forces. Women of the British Armed Forces also began to wear the trench coat.

Both the Burberry trench coat and the London Fog trench coat were designed for the military and had on it all of the necessary loops and belts to be an aid to the soldier. There were looped epaulets on the shoulder convenient for carrying gloves, caps and other flat things. The belt had a D ring convenient for carrying maps. The coat had style being double breasted with brass military buttons.

In both Britain and the United States celebrities wore the long trench coat in the movies they made and in their personal lives. They wore them in comedies, dramas (Westerns and thrillers). The popularity of the trench coat remains.

In today’s modern world the traditional trench coat has changed very little. From the basic tan fabric to shearling, faux fur, and leather trench coat.

The colors have also changed from the original tan and black to almost any color imaginable, i.e. red, purple, yellow, and more.

The trench coat has gone from the traditional type of coat to a reversible model, or one with a detachable lining.

The newest addition to the trench coat is the hood. There is now available a men’s hooded trench coat, which is proving to be tremendously popular.

The trench coat has gone from being a traditional military style coat to a modern warm hooded trench coat. It has not changed its basic style nor has it lost its popularity.

In spite of the fact that the length has gone from a short trench coat to long and back again, it has always kept the principal features that made it so popular.

Every retail shop knows what you want if you ask for a Burberry or a London Fog, but now you have much more choice in both design and colors.

The hooded trench coat offers you all the great attributes of the original full length coats with the added benefit of a hood to keep you both drier and warmer.

The gothic trench coat is often associated with visions of anarchy and rebellion, and while in some instances this may be true, it is not always the case.

The gothic trench coat is worn by someone who is making a statement, they are not afraid to stand out in the crowd, and do not want to blend away into insignificance.

The gothic trench coat first became popular in the late 1970’s to early 80’s. The music of that era included ‘Punk’. The ‘Punk’ image was all about ‘bucking the trend’, and refusing to conform. Razor blade earrings and safety pins through your lip were a way of saying, I don’t care what you think!

Many ‘Punks’ began to wear a long black trench coat, and soon the Gothic style appeared on the scene.

In the 1980’s more and more young people were favoring the Goth image, and the gothic trench coat was an essential part of their wardrobe. It still remains a central part of Goth culture.

Mens gothic coats were seen in many horror films and vampire movies of the 80’s and 90’s, and were worn by both hero and villain. Even the most scary character was seen as exciting and sexy in his trench coat. Men were keen to adopt this type of image and sales quickly started to rise.

Edward Scissorhands, The Matrix, Blade, etc. can all be associated with this style of coat.

A gothic coat can be made from a range of fabrics and a variety of materials.

Black gothic leather coats, black hair, and black make up are often the image that springs to mind when we think of the typical Goth. But although  many Goth’s do opt for wearing a leather trench coat, there are many who prefer the smooth velvet gothic coat.

The gothic trench coat is usually slim fitting and very long. It may be covered in zips and D rings, or the buttons could be skull shaped. There may be slashes, safety pins, or studs dotted around the body area.

A gothic trench coat may have buttons, a zip, or hook and eye fastening. There is usually a deep vent at the back, making movement and sitting down more easy. Some designs even include a hood.

Some Goth coats have corset lacing down the back, a fish tail hem, and they may be made from heavyweight cotton, twill, PVC, or faux fur.

Some gothic trench coats have a hint of ‘S&M’ and are termed ‘bondage coats’. This is usually because they have tapes or chains which connect the sleeves to the main body of the coat.

Many gothic trench coats for men have a skeleton, crucifix, or skull on the upper back section of the coat.

The Goth style trench coats are often referred to as Emo trench coats, Punk trench coats, Vampire trench coats, Matrix style trench coats, Gothic Priest Vampire coats, and Pirate trench coats.

There are many top designer brands with Gothic Punk, Tripp, and Lip Service being very popular.

There is no doubt that there is a huge range of designs and materials to choose from, and that the gothic trench coat makes a statement all of its own.

Leather Trench Coats.

The leather trench coat dates back to the eighteen hundreds, when leather clothing was a necessity because it was strong and long wearing. A man’s job or profession was identified by the type of leather clothing he wore.

The rancher or farmer would wear buck skin clothing which he made for himself, while a minister or sales man would wear a long black leather coat.

The leather trench coat of the 19th century was later immortalized by Hollywood in all the old westerns. And because of the old westerns we are all aware that the west was very dusty. A man needed a coat that could repel the dust. Leather was the answer because the dust could be easily wiped off. These full length coats were commonly called a duster.

In the twentieth century the full length leather trench coat was no longer considered the costume of the 1800’s but a practical garb with a place in a modern man’s wardrobe.

In the 1900’s trench coats for men became a part of the costume for the automobile driver. The automobile was open and therefore the driver would have a selection of special gear to wear when he drove the car. This was necessary to protect him from the weather, and also the dust that blow up from the very basic road surfaces. The gear consisted of goggles, a scarf, a flat cap, gloves and a leather duster.

When the leather coat was no longer necessary for practical reasons it became more popular as a fashionable item of clothing.

In the 1970’s the leather trench coat came into its own as a fashion statement for both men and women alike. A man in a leather trench coat was considered the epitome of fashion and was seen as sharp in personality and looks.

In the early days it was seen as very masculine to wear a leather trench coat. Men would appear strong and capable and they enjoyed this image, whereas women did not wear leather as it was considered unfeminine to do so.

Attitudes have changed considerably over the years and the image of leather trench coats has changed. Men still look strong and capable when wearing them, but they also look quite sexy. Today we all accept that a woman in a leather coat not only retains her femininity but she too can look incredibly sexy, if she wishes to do so.

Leather trench coats vary in quality from the less expensive coat to the upscale high end coat. Colors of the leather trench coat have also changed. What was once only accepted in black or brown can now be purchased in any color from white to deep purple and all of the colors in between.

The leather trench coat can be single or double breasted, and may have a loose belt or an adjustable one that ties with a buckle.

A leather trench coat is something of a fashion status symbol so shop and enjoy.
