Long Trench Coats

London Fog Trench Coats.

Never has there been a coat so popular and so well liked by the wearer as the London Fog Trench Coat. The trench coat was first seen during the Boar wars but nothing much was said about it at the time. It again made an appearance in the First World War when it was worn by officers and warrant officers Class One of the British armed forces.

It got the name of trench coat because it was worn in the trenches. It was not too long after its acceptance by the British armed forces that the men complained that the coats were too long and hard to maintain, and so the coat was eventually shortened. The enlisted men were later allowed to wear the trench coat.

Not too long after that the British women’s armed forces adopted the trench coat as part of their uniform. During World War II the armed forces of the United States, Russia and other European nations began to wear the long trench coat.

The trench coat was adaptable to the need of the officers and soldiers of the armed forces of any nation. They had straps on the shoulders that buttoned down and D rings. It was once believed that he D ring was there to carry grenades. This is untrue, as they were there to carry maps and other small items.

Now that we know who wore the early full length trench coats we need to know who made them. The coats worn by the British were made by Burberry. The American version was made by London Fog and soon the London Fog trench coat became an important item in the wardrobe of every man and woman in the United States.

The original London Fog trench coat came in one color, tan. Now both men and women can find other colors and both genders wear the London Fog.

The London Fog trench coats popularity extended to Hollywood and other movie makers to wit: Peter Seller’s Inspector Clouseau and Peter Faulk’s very disheveled Columbo. The good guys and the bad guys both wore them.

The style of the London Fog trench coat has not changed much since it was introduced to the public and its popularity remains. No matter how updated and fashionable a man or woman is the trench coat is in their wardrobe and worn with the same pride as any designer coat would be worn.

If you walk into a retail store and ask for a London Fog they all know you mean a trench coat. Although the style has not changed much, the choice of color has, although the tan and black are still the colors of choice by most wearers.

The London Fog trench coat can be worn over a suit or dress as business wear or with jeans and slacks for casual wear. They are now also made with removable linings to accommodate the comfort of the wearer in all sorts of weather. Because it hasn’t any fashion boundaries, it’s time to get one.

Mens Trench Coats.

The mens trench coat has long  been a staple in any mans clothing collection, but its purpose has changed over the centuries.

Originally this style of topcoat was worn to keep out the cold during bad weather and harsh winters. It was worn to protect the wearer from the dirt and dust that were common in those primitive times.

Today the mens trench coat is a fashion item and can be found in the high street, shopping mall, gentleman’s outfitters, and most convenient of all on the internet.

The traditional black and brown trench coat, the military trench coat style, the full length leather trench coat, the mid length trench coat and the jacket style, can all be easily found on general sale, and top designers always have them in their clothing collections.

Emporio Armani, Burberry, and London Fog, are just a few of the world famous brand names that are renowned for their production of top quality fashionable mens trench coats.

The long trench coats were worn in order to protect the wearer, but although they may be worn for the same purpose today the full length coat has a hint of mystery about it, and women find this look attractive.

The beauty of mens trench coats is in their versatility. They can be worn by men of all ages whether they seek the traditional formal look, or the more trendy casual look.

The coat can look just as good worn over a 3 piece suit as it does worn over jeans and a sweater.

The leather gothic coat is more suited to the younger generation, yet it still creates a tidy if somewhat mysterious look. Indeed, many ‘young at heart’ rock stars can’t bear to part with their favorite leather trench coat.

The mens trench coat can be found in heavyweight wool and lightweight cotton, making it suitable for all seasons.

Many cotton models are designed with a quilted detachable lining held in place with either a zipper or small buttons. This makes it suitable for use all year round, whether there’s a snowstorm brewing or a light sun shower.

The double breasted version is on a parallel with the single breasted version, in the popularity stakes. Favorite colors include the traditional khaki, black, beige, and midnight blue.

For an individual look you can have your coat designed to your own specifications, from everything to the material that is used to the color of the lining.

It’s no wonder that the mens trench coat is becoming an even more essential part of mens outerwear.

Mens Duster Coats.

The mens duster coat originated in the 1800’s in the Australian outback when an early entrepreneur decided to use old boat sails to make a cape that would be strong enough to withstand the hardest winds and was totally waterproof. He soaked the sails in linseed oil made them into capes and sold them to the sailors. Eventually, the sailors gave up the water and went on to become drovers. Those early duster coats were then called drover coats.

Later the mens duster coat was worn by the Texas Rangers. The coat was specifically made to accommodate a rider on horseback. The horseback riders duster was long and had a slit up the back, and the slit was held together with the help of buttons. The slit made it easier for the horseback rider to ride the trail. The coat was long and made of either of canvas or linen, and treated as oil cloth to make it water repellent.

The mens duster coats again made an appearance in the 1920’s when motor cars came onto the scene. They were a sort of uniform that was worn by the driver of this new open vehicle. The driver wore a duster, a scarf, flat cap, boots, goggles and gloves. The vehicle, would today be considered a sort of convertible, gathered dust, as it sped at 25 miles per hour, and the duster coat and all other accessories kept the driver from getting the dust onto himself and into his eyes.

As it is with most apparel, they find their way into films and books. In films the bad guys wore them to look villainous and the good guys wore them to look strong, attractive, and adventurous. In books they were worn by villains, vampires, spies and other worldly visitors. In fact in the series Dark Tower, Stephen King’s villains were known as the men in the long yellow coats. These coats were described as dusters.

The modern man wears a duster to make a fashion statement and sometimes to change his image.

The long full length trench coat with its small cape across the shoulders and turned up collar, is definitely an image maker. Although it no longer serves the same purpose as did the duster coats of past eras, it still serves a purpose. The long coat is still a good protection against the inclement weather of some areas since many are still water and dust repellent. However, it is not an appropriate piece of apparel for bicycling since the coat gets in the way of the bicycle’s mechanism.

The man wearing the long trench coats or mens duster coats still cuts an elegant looking figure, even in today’s fashion world. Unlike most retro costuming today, the mens duster coat does not look out of place when being worn, because it does blend in with other men’s apparel. The mens duster coat could have been the predecessor of the men’s topcoat of today and could easily be worn like one.
